Old Growth × Leatherius Woodman – a Felton leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
A September study – Volume I-C.
Old Growth is a small collection for Felton, cut where Highway 9 slips under the redwoods on its way up the San Lorenzo Valley. Four designs, pressed into the leathers the grove wears – deep greens and warm browns, with one golden tan for the sun.
First, the ring. When an old redwood falls, sprouts rise from its own roots and grow into a circle of trees around the place it stood – foresters call it a family circle. We drew that ring around its empty center and set FROM ONE ROOT over the crowns.
It looks genuinely beautiful.

On the golden tan tray the ring runs at full size, and the deep green journal carries it in the corner.

Next, the covered bridge. For forty-five years it was the way into town, so we drew what every crossing sees – the X braces repeating overhead and the planks running toward the light at the far end.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather – here on a chestnut tag, and in the corner of a toiletry bag in honeyed russet over deep brown.

Then, the local authority on pace. A banana slug crosses beneath trunks too tall for the frame, carrying the one piece of trail advice that always holds – TAKE IT SLOW.
We ran it lengthwise along a golden tan tag, the closest leather we own to banana.

Keychains with the slug look just awesome too.

And finally, Highway 9. In our drawing, the road loops once around the oldest tree before it heads down the valley, and the loop draws the 9 all by itself. We pressed it into the corner of a warm tan journal, the one that rides shotgun on the drive up.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
