Picked for You – leather studies of Middletown, Rhode Island
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.
A September study. Volume I-D.
Picked for You is a leather collection rooted in Middletown, Rhode Island – the farm side of Aquidneck Island, where the picking runs from June strawberries to autumn apples. Five stamped designs across luggage tags and journals, with the smaller goods riding along.
First, the walls. Middletown's fields are still edged with the fieldstone its farmers stacked while clearing them, so we ran a drystone wall the length of a luggage tag and set AQUIDNECK ISLAND above it. The wall runs on warm gray and deep green leather; the black tag carries the design in gold.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
Next, the line the whole farm rests on. A strawberry hangs by its stem from the words PICKED FOR YOU – the reason anyone carries a gift home in the first place, and here you can do it literally. We stamped it on keychains in warm red and warm tan.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Then the flower field, where picking is done into wide-mouth jars. We drew the jar with the stems crossing inside it and set PICK MORE FLOWERS beneath – standing advice, pressed into the corner of a journal in pale rose and in deep green.
For the catchall tray we pressed Boyd's Mill, the eight-vaned windmill the town still keeps in working order, with MIDDLETOWN beneath it. Whatever leaves your pockets at night lands on the island, in golden tan.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
And finally, the orchard read as a roster. SANSA, ZESTAR, HONEYCRISP, MACOUN, MUTSU – five apples stacked like a ledger under a single fruit, in the corner of a toiletry bag on honeyed russet leather, the color of the season itself.
