Pine & Ice – leather studies of Voorhees Township, New Jersey
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
A September study. Volume I-B.
Pine & Ice is a small leather collection rooted in Voorhees Township, New Jersey – a town that once cut its winter ice straight from Kirkwood Lake and still keeps its pines close. We pressed that world into luggage tags and journals, with a few companions alongside.
First, the road. Haddonfield-Berlin Road was a shore route long before anyone numbered it 561, so we drew it doing what it has always done, running straight through the pines into a low sun, and set THE OLD ROAD TO THE SHORE beneath it.
The black tag carries the road in gold. The deep green and pale warm greige tags take a blind press.
Next, the ice. There was a time when a company harvested winter ice off Kirkwood Lake, so we cut the trade a badge – tongs lifting one block clear, the saw still standing in the scored lake.
It looks genuinely beautiful stamped small on a navy keychain, and at generous size across the base of a golden tan catchall tray, where rings and clasps can spend the night.
Then, Black Run – one town over, where old cranberry bogs went back to forest and the streams still wind dark under the pines. We put the run itself on the journal cover, a cranberry vine crossing it, down in the corner where a thumb rests.
One journal in deep wine for the cranberries, the other in deep green.
And finally, the mark the collection is named after. A pine stands at the waterline and its reflection comes back cut into blocks, the way the harvest cut the lake. PINE & ICE.
We pressed it low in the corner of a navy toiletry bag and centered on a warm tan keychain fob. Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
