Rows to the Sea, Volume I-B – a leather collection from Middletown, Rhode Island
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies. Volume I-B.
A September study.
On Aquidneck Island the picking rows run toward the water – walk an aisle far enough and the sea stands up at the end of it. We spent September pressing that walk, and the season around it, into leather. A small collection from Middletown, Rhode Island: Rows to the Sea.
First, the walk itself. We set two trained rows in perspective with the aisle open between them, and where the ground gives out, ruled lines of sea – ROWS TO THE SEA lettered across the sky. On the luggage tags the design runs lengthwise, the long way of the walk.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather – and the pale sea-blue tag brings its own horizon.
Next, the forecast that matters here – we set a sun over one enormous strawberry and arched PICKING WEATHER above it.
The same stamp sits low in the corner of the toiletry bag, golden tan over chestnut – packed for a weekend that plans around the fields and the beach.
Then, ISLAND GROWN – a wreath of berry sprigs around the two words, MIDDLETOWN RHODE ISLAND beneath. We pressed it into the corner of the journals, where garden notes and pie experiments get written down. One journal is blueberry, the leather and the crop; the other is gray sand, for the beach half of the day.
And finally, IN SEASON – an armful of blossoms and berries with the words on a banner through the stems, pressed at generous size into a golden tan catchall tray. Whatever the day put in your pockets ends up somewhere beautiful.
It looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
