TAKE YOUR SWEET TIME – leather studies of Lititz, Pennsylvania
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
A September study. Volume I-B.
We took what Lititz, Pennsylvania is sweetest at and stamped it into leather – a collection called TAKE YOUR SWEET TIME, running from pretzel keychains to spring-water luggage tags.
First, the pretzel. Lititz has baked them commercially since 1861, so we tied the knot itself into the design – LITITZ arched over the top, IN A TWIST SINCE 1861 underneath, salt still on the crust.
On keychains in warm caramel and deep espresso – one the color of the crust, the other of a bake gone long. Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Next, we borrowed the old postcard view of Lititz Springs – the stone-lined channel running straight to the springhead, tall trees leaning in overhead – and drew it wide, so the whole walk lies along a luggage tag.
We ran it on a deep green tag for the trees and a pale sea-blue one for the water. The black tag carries the scene in gold foil.
Then we crimped a bottle cap around the town's name – the kind a kid pried off at the soda counter and kept in a pocket for a week.
We pressed it into the corner of the toiletry bags, in honeyed russet and in chestnut – root beer held up to the light. Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
And finally, the design the collection is named for – a twist-wrapped candy carrying TAKE YOUR SWEET TIME, which is how an afternoon in Lititz actually goes.
On journal covers in pale rose and in deep cherry wine. And centered, generously, on a golden tan catchall tray – butterscotch by another name. It looks genuinely beautiful.
