The Dogwood Mile – a leather collection for Flowood, Mississippi
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on original designs.
A September study. Volume I-B.
The Dogwood Mile is a small leather collection we designed for Flowood, Mississippi – for the hands that walk the mile at the Nature Park and keep a line in the water at the Rez.
First, we ringed FLOWOOD with dogwood blossoms – the tree the town's whole retail quarter is named for – and pressed the wreath into the center of a golden tan catchall tray, the dish by the door that holds the keys.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
Next, the Nature Park. We drew the walking loop as one dashed mile around the lake, set ONE MILE OF LOOKING over it, and stamped it upright on luggage tags in deep green for the hardwoods and warm tan for the path. A pale sea-blue tag joined them for the water.
Then, GONE PAINTING – the sign a studio would hang on its door when the light outside is too good. We hung it from an empty field easel and pressed it into the corner of two journals, one in pale greige close to raw canvas, the other in deep green for where the easels actually stand.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
And finally, MEET ME AT THE REZ. A bobber tips on the ripples, mid-nibble. We stamped it on keychains in navy and golden tan, and on the corner of a toiletry bag stacked navy over chestnut – the bag that gets packed for a weekend on the water.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
