The Grand & the Lake – a Painesville, Ohio leather collection
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
A September study. Volume I-B.
The Grand & the Lake is a small leather collection rooted in Painesville, Ohio – the river that runs through town and the water it is running to. Four stamps, pressed onto everything from luggage tags to journals.
First, the pier at Painesville Township Park – canopy after canopy down the deck to its square end over Lake Erie. We drew it in profile and letterspaced MEET ME AT THE PIER across the sky, so the whole design runs lengthwise along the tag.
Navy for the water, pale greige for the shore. The black tag carries the design in gold.
Next, one for the river itself. The Grand is steelhead water, and the people who love a steelheader know exactly what that means – so we put the fish mid-leap inside a ring of type, GRAND RIVER above and STEELHEAD below.
Keychains with the steelhead stamp look just awesome.
The same fish sits in the corner of the toiletry bags, on blueberry and on dark espresso.
Then, LAKE EFFECT. This close to Erie the snow arrives sideways, and a journal is for exactly the kind of day those two words describe. The storm streaks past above the letters; the letters hold.
Pale greige like the snow, navy like the lake under it.
And finally, the one we liked the most. A catchall tray is where the rings spend the night, so we interlocked two of them above the waterline and wrote a vow underneath – UNTIL THE LAKE RUNS DRY.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
