The Saguaro Years × Leatherius Woodman – a Scottsdale leather stamping study

The Saguaro Years – Volume I-C.

A September study.

Old Town Scottsdale. We drew three stamps from the slow, documented life of the saguaro and pressed them into leather.

First, the seedling. A saguaro spends its earliest years under a nurse tree, a palo verde or mesquite whose shade keeps it alive, so we set the little ribbed cactus safe under the branches and wrote it plainly: NURSE TREE.

We pressed it on keychains in golden tan and deep green.

Next, the flower. Saguaro blossoms open after dark, so we crowned the ribs with cups of petals and set BLOOMS AT NIGHT beneath them.

The black luggage tag carries the gold – the one flower here that opens in the dark.

The deep green and pale greige tags take a blind deboss.

A toiletry bag keeps the same hours, so the stamp sits in the corner of the black bag, over its deep brown base.

And finally, the one we liked the most. A saguaro grows for decades before its first arms bud, so we drew a young column with both arms just beginning – ARMS TAKE DECADES.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather. The journals – warm tan and deep brown – are for writing that takes its time, and the golden tan tray holds the everyday while the arms grow.
