The Waterline Collection – Flowood, Mississippi, in stamped leather
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies.
A September study. Volume I-C.
Flowood, Mississippi keeps its whole landscape inside its name – the flow and the wood. We spent September pressing that place into leather, and called the result the Waterline Collection.
First, the name itself. FLOW meets WOOD at the letter they share, so we set FLOWOOD on the waterline – a bank of hardwoods above its own rippled reflection, with the word resting on the open water between.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
The deep green and pale sand luggage tags take the word as a blind deboss. The black tag carries it in gold.
Next, the heron that fishes the Pearl. We drew it poised in the shallows, ripples opening at its feet, and wrote STILL LOOKING beneath – true of the bird, and true of anyone who spends an afternoon in front of pictures.
It rides the keychains in pale sea-blue and in navy, and stands at full height on the golden tan catchall tray, where the looking ends.
Then, for the journals, we planted a field easel on the bank and left its canvas empty, with DRAWN FROM LIFE underneath. The pages behind the cover are the canvas.
It looks genuinely beautiful on both the warm gray and the caramel.
And finally, the walk. The park's paved loop runs one mile around a lake and through old hardwoods, so we traced it loosely from the city's own plan, trailhead dot and all, and named it ONE GOOD MILE. It sits in the corner of the toiletry bags, navy over dark espresso – a mile that packs.
