Willapa & Wheel, Volume I-A – a leather stamping study from Raymond, Washington
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of original leather stamping studies.
A September study. Volume I-A.
Willapa & Wheel is a small collection of original leather stamps for Raymond, Washington – a river town that was built on stilts over the tidelands and made its living on wheels and water.
First, we drew a carriage wheel head-on and set the town's old boast running around its rim – THE CITY THAT DOES THINGS, still turning.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather – here on keychains in golden tan and dark espresso.
The same wheel presses small and deep into the corner of the toiletry bags, honeyed russet over dark espresso – spoke wood over iron.
Next, the stagecoach in full profile, slung on its leather thorough-braces, and under it the one word the whole machine ran on – HORSEPOWER. It rides lengthwise along the luggage tags, in caramel and in a warm coach-paint red.
The black tag carries it in gold.
Then the journals. Raymond stood on stilts over the tidelands, so we stood RAYMOND on stilts too, with ON THE WILLAPA below the waterline. It turned out genuinely beautiful – here in deep green and navy, the banks and the river.
And finally, a catchall tray in golden tan. A deer stands square in the middle of the road under the words LOCAL TRAFFIC – around here, everything learns to stop for it. Keys included.
