The Year-Rounder Collection – leather studies of Hyannis, Massachusetts

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For Hyannis, Massachusetts – five stamps we call the Year-Rounder Collection.

First, the luggage tags. Every ferry out of the harbor writes its wake behind it, and the wake points straight back at the dock. So we drew the boat small on the horizon and let the wake fan open all the way down to HYANNIS.

Next, the keychains – a round badge for the ones who stay. YEAR ROUNDER circles a dial of twelve month-marks, and a scallop shell holds the middle. Pressed into deep marsh green and warm dune tan.

Then the wash bags. A wash bag is a morning object, so it carries the morning forecast: a sun still climbing through ruled bands of fog, over the words FOG TILL NOON. Stamped small in the corner, fog gray over deep espresso brown.

After that, the catchall tray, which is really a tideline for your pockets. A wrack line wanders across the golden tan base, strewn with small beach finds, above the words WHAT THE TIDE LEFT. Keys and coins wash up right beside them.

And finally, the one we liked the most. The bravest sign on any Cape storefront is the one that stays up past Labor Day, so we hung it on the journal – a swinging board under a cap of snow, reading OPEN ALL WINTER. A notebook keeps its hours through the quiet months too. One navy, one deep wine. It looks genuinely beautiful.
