How to Lay Out Initials on a Personalized Leather Flask
For a straight block monogram, enter the initials in reading order – first, middle, last. For the traditional style where the middle letter is enlarged, the big letter is the surname and it sits between the first and middle initials. The seven styles, and what each one takes

Alongside those, a first name or a surname can be pressed on its own in a straight font or in cursive. That is the option to take when the recipient is a "MATTHEW" rather than an "MJH", which covers most gifts to fathers.
One initial or three
A single letter is the safer gift. You only need the surname initial, and one letter stays legible at any size on a small stamp area. It is also what the Initial hip flask is built around – one large framed letter on the front of the wrap.
Three initials are the right call when you know the person's full name and the flask is going to someone who owns other monogrammed things. Use the enlarged-middle style if you want it to read as a proper monogram, and plain block capitals if you want it to read as a name tag rather than heraldry.
Getting the letter order right
This is the question that trips people up, and the answer depends on which style you picked.
Style 4, plain block capitals. Type them in the order you want to see them. For John Robert Miller that is JRM. No rearranging happens.
Style 5, surname initial enlarged in the middle. The large center letter is the surname. John Robert Miller becomes J M R, displayed with the M large in the middle. This is the traditional arrangement and it catches people out, since the letters are no longer in the order the name is spoken.
Styles 6 and 7. Same principle as style 5 – the surname carries the center position.
For a married couple sharing one flask, the usual arrangement is the two first-name initials on the outside with the shared surname initial in the middle. Type the initials in the order you want them and say in the personalization box which letter is the surname.
Block or script
Block capitals hold up better at flask scale. The stamp area is small and the leather is textured, and a heavy uniform letterform survives both of those. Script and the vine monogram look better in a photograph and lose a little definition in the hand, particularly on a distressed hide where the surface grain competes with fine strokes.
The practical rule: block for a man's flask or for anything carrying a surname, script when the flask is a decorative gift and the recipient likes decorative things. For a young man receiving his first flask, block capitals age better.
Plain stamp or gold
A plain stamp presses the letters into the hide with no ink at all – you read them by the shadow the impression throws. Gold lays a warm metallic finish into the same impression. Both are permanent and both are included in the price.
Plain is the default and the right answer on a mid-tone leather like Caramel or Sicilian Brown, where the shadow reads clearly. Gold is the answer on Black and Dark Espresso, where a plain press is subtle by design. Gold also survives handling well, since it sits down inside the impression rather than on the surface where a thumb would rub it. Names, dates and symbols
A first name presses cleanly, and so does a surname. Dates work – the format used on our stamp chart is 08.07.2023. Small symbols are available too, among them a heart set between two initials and an ampersand. Those suit a wedding flask or an anniversary gift more than a groomsman set.
On length: a name the size of JOHNSON or MATTHEW sits comfortably in the stamp area. If you want something longer, a two-line layout or an accented character, ask before you order rather than typing it in and hoping. A message with the exact text gets you a straight answer.
Where the stamp sits, and how to submit it
Names and initials press into the front face of the leather wrap, low and to one side. The framed single-initial designs on the Hip Flasks collection sit centered instead, with the letter inside a pressed border. The back of the flask stays plain.
