2 Moms Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

2 Moms Travel began as a family travel blog, written by Lara at a time when LGBT family travel had few public voices. Readers followed the family's itineraries closely enough that planning other people's trips became the work, and the blog grew into a travel-planning company rooted in Missoula, Montana. Lara studied foreign languages and spent an exchange year in Toluca, Mexico. She later served three years in Germany as a military intelligence analyst, which may explain the rigor behind the itineraries. She and her wife Deb travel with their two children, whose tally on the About page stood at nearly 25 countries, ranging from Glacier National Park to villages in Vietnam.

The wordmark is what asked for this study. A light gray serif numeral opens it, and Moms follows in a large navy script whose capital M makes a full loop before settling into the word. Down the far right edge the word TRAVEL curves vertically in small gray capitals, quiet as a spine label. Serif and script in one mark make a demanding die; thin gray strokes and fat navy loops want different depths, and we wanted to see whether one press could honor both.

The mark, as found

Pressed lengthwise

Blueberry answers the navy script and country gray answers the serif numeral, so we pressed the wordmark lengthwise on both. Black carries the gold. The compact source file worried us at first; a mark 245 pixels wide keeps its edge decisions to itself, so we redrew it at high resolution before any pressing, and the loop of the M held better than we expected.

Nearly 25 countries

The companion design counts the family in luggage. Two tall suitcases stand above two small ones, and beneath the four runs the line NEARLY 25 COUNTRIES, the About page's own arithmetic for the children. Lengthwise again, so the tag reads like a departures board.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
