5 Charms Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

5 Charms Travel is the agency of a planner named Darla, who has designed journeys for hundreds of clients over the past three years. The number in the name is a household count: she is the mother of five adult children and grandmother, so far, of one, and she calls her family her favorite travel companions. The love of travel reaches back further, to a girl beside her grandfather, listening to his stories of his travels around the world. Our master file places her in Spokane, Washington; the detail stayed unconfirmed on her own pages, so take it as our marginal note, held loosely.

Her line for the work is “I believe travel should feel like a beautiful story, written just for you.” Plenty of agency taglines pass through this log; hers is among the few that sound like a person talking. The mark holds up its end. A tall teal numeral 5 anchors the left while charms flows past in a looped script, its capital C climbing well above the rest of the word. A small bold serif travel steadies the lower right. Lettering this developed, drawn for one business alone, is exactly what our press wants to meet.

Pressed

We pressed the mark on pale sea-blue, after its teal lettering, and on pale gray-sand, after the quiet white ground the logo lives on. Black with gold foil completes the set, and there the teal reads as pure form.

The Five Charms

For the companion design we drew the name as jewelry and pressed it lengthwise. A single chain of small oval links sags gently across the width of the tag. From it hang five charms on their jump rings; an airplane and a suitcase take the left side, a globe and a compass the right. At the exact center, hanging lowest and half again as tall as its neighbors, is a plain block 5. Beneath the bracelet runs one line, WRITTEN JUST FOR YOU. We debated adding a clasp and a little sparkle around the charms, then left both out, since the chain carries the idea on its own.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
