Amaze Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Amaze Travel is the Chicago agency of Jim and Julie Welch, travel partners for more than twenty years and Virtuoso members working at the luxury end of the trade. The biography pages are what held us. Their children carried passports before turning one. Jim points to Seoul and the 1988 Olympics as the journey that set his course, while Julie spent years living and traveling in Latin America. A household like that earns its creed, and theirs sits right in the logo in small gold capitals: “EXPLORE, ENCOUNTER, ENRICH.”

The mark is a compass rosette in gold and charcoal, four long cardinal points with shorter curled rays between them, set above wide geometric capitals. Compasses cross our bench often. This one is unusually disciplined, and discipline is what a steel die rewards.

The mark, as found

Pressed lengthwise

Caramel follows the warm gold of the rosette, and dark espresso follows the charcoal of the wordmark. Black carries the gold foil. We debated dropping the bottom line, since type that small tends to fill in under a stamp; at tag width it stayed legible, so it stayed.

The first candle

Children with passports before their first birthdays suggested this piece on their own. A portrait passport cover, one small birthday candle standing above “EXPLORE, ENCOUNTER, ENRICH.” The candle is modest and the sentiment is large, which felt right for a family that measures its years in stamps.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
