Bayview Escapes × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Bayview Escapes Travel, LLC has planned custom itineraries out of Ellsworth, Maine since 2015, a locally owned shop run by Domenic Efter, owner and agent, whose current profile carries the heading “Your Downeast Travel Partner.” Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor sit among his named specialties, so the man arranging Caribbean beach weeks does it from the gateway town to Acadia's granite coast. The agency says it covers relaxing beach vacations and adventurous outdoor getaways, and we believe it; anyone who has read Ellsworth weather in March understands both ends of the travel urge.

The name is what asked for this study. Bayview stands at the water's edge and stays put; Escapes is already halfway down the dock. Two words pulling in opposite directions, sharing one sign. We wondered whether a single stamped mark could hold that tension without splitting.

The mark this study proposes

We drew a circular bay window, set portrait, holding a single horizon and two short dashes of water, with a small sailboat slipping half out of the circle's right side above the letters BAYVIEW ESCAPES. The boat sat centered in our first pass and read like a postcard, pretty and inert; letting it break the frame gave the mark its verb. A window shows you what stays. The boat is leaving anyway.

Pressed

For leather we pressed the family into pale sea-blue and deep forest green, the sea-blue answering the island and ocean pictures the agency leads with, the green answering the Downeast and Acadia side of Domenic's practice. Black carries the gold foil, as it always does here.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
