Bee Kalt Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Bee Kalt Travel has planned leisure travel from Royal Oak, Michigan since 1958, and three generations of the Kalt family have run it in that time. Shari Kalt is president now; Steven Kalt advises on luxury travel. They turn a client's idea of a trip into a custom experience, cruises and safaris among the specialties, and they call the detail-work a family tradition. The line under their name reads “DISCOVER CUSTOMIZED LUXURY.”

What asked for the study is plain enough. A compass rose already anchors their mark, and this series lives on luggage tags, so a compass pressed into a thing made for travel felt inevitable. There is also the name. Bee Kalt arrives with its own insect, and we accepted the gift.

The mark, as found

Pressed lengthwise

The compass takes a press gratefully. Its double rim and perimeter ticks read like tooling lines, and the four long cardinal points give the die somewhere firm to bite. The small tagline beneath the wordmark is another matter; at stamp scale it would fill in, so we set it aside and let the compass and the bold serif capitals of BEE KALT TRAVEL carry the mark, which they do without strain. We ran the pair lengthwise on pale sea-blue, which answers the dark teal of the compass, and on country gray, which keeps to the cool restraint of their page. Black carries the gold.

The beeline

The companion design starts with the name. A single bee flies one looping, unhurried line toward a small compass rose. Their site keeps returning to one promise, that a traveler can hand the details to someone who knows the way, and the drawing says the same thing in a bee and a line. Portrait, to run the long way down a tag.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
