Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
An August study.
Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection works out of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and exists for the worst hour of a good trip. A suitcase wanders off in a foreign hub, or a connection closes its doors, and somewhere in Wisconsin a claims team starts moving. The company set out to simplify travel insurance and still states its whole mission in four words, “Plan Simplicity, Claims Excellence.” What won us over is the phrase it uses for its own culture, a “pay-first, pay-fast mentality.” Insurance rarely speaks of speed as a kindness. Here it does.
So we imagined leather for the people around that promise: the travel advisors and partners who put these plans in travelers’ hands, and the colleagues who answer the phone when an itinerary bends. Objects for people who stay calm on other people’s worst travel days.
The mark, as found
A distressed circular seal, lowercase bh at its center and the company’s full name running the outer ring, the arcs spaced by three small squares on either side. It already carries the character of a well-inked passport stamp, which is a rare head start for leather work.

Pressed
The seal is compact and nearly square, so it stands upright on a trio of luggage tags. A blueberry navy sits closest to the seal’s own deep royal ink, and a caramel tan gives it the classic luggage leather that travelers have trusted for a century. The black tag carries the gold, the one foil pass in the whole study. Every other press here is blind debossed, tone on tone, the way a mark should sit in leather it plans to live with.

Back on course
The seal carries the company’s name. This companion carries what the company actually does for a traveler whose day just fell apart. A dotted route leaves its departure point and meets a small storm mid-climb. It dips politely beneath the cloud, then keeps climbing until an arrowhead reaches its star. Under the scene, three words: BACK ON COURSE. Any advisor who has rebooked a stranded family at midnight will recognize the shape of that line.

On the keychain duo the route rides one fob in brand navy and one in pale sea-blue, the water color of the whole traveling world.

Passport covers join because this is a travel house through and through. The stamp sits centered and pressed deep on a navy cover and a pale warm greige one, the quiet colors of the document inside.

And the catchall tray, in golden tan, takes the same design at the center of its base, where keys and boarding passes land at the end of a long day.

Fair winds
BHTP promises a “fair, fast claims experience.” Sailors have wished each other fair winds for centuries. The second companion joins the two… a small paper plane in level flight above a thin horizon rule, and beneath it FAIR WINDS over FAST CLAIMS. We did pause over whether a wish oversells; insurance people are careful with promises, and rightly. But the words are the company’s own, only rearranged, and a wish is honest about being a wish.

It signs the toiletry bags as a corner maker’s mark, brand navy over deep espresso brown, the pairing of a night flight.

The journals take it generously in the lower corner, on pale sea-blue and warm caramel tan, sea and sand. Advisors build trips on paper before any traveler boards; the page these open to is where a journey first exists.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
