Beyond the Blue Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
Beyond the Blue Travel is a full-service travel agency in Paynesville, Minnesota, founded in 2019 by Paul Wegner. Paul spent more than twenty years in law enforcement and finished as Chief of Police, and he says the agency grew from understanding what a quality escape can do for people in high-stress careers. The love of travel goes back further, to a first cruise in 1998 and to years of planning trips for family and friends before any of it was a business.
The name is the philosophy. Their About page reads it as going beyond your comfort zone and beyond the career you sacrifice for, and the tagline promises “Vacations Beyond Expectations.” A Going Beyond Initiative sends a portion of each year's proceeds to a community organization the agency chooses. We came for the mark, which arrived finished: a black shield of palms and waves under a single white star, and a blue rule running out from beneath the name to a small plane flying right. Work like that asks to be pressed as it stands.
The mark, as found

Pressed
Blueberry answers the blue that gives the agency its name, and country gray echoes the cool outline that steadies the shield; both take the shield and the heavy block capitals in a deep, even press. Black carries the gold foil.

Going beyond
For the lengthwise tag we drew the climb. Three wave bands sit low, and a small plane rises along five dashes above BEYOND THE BLUE. We tried four dashes and six before settling on five; fewer made the climb look timid, and more turned it into a dotted border. It is the plainer of the two drawings, and it may be the one Paul recognizes first.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
