Blue Venture Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
Blue Venture Travel is a boutique agency we place in Birmingham, Alabama, designing custom itineraries for people who want, in their words, to “journey boldly.” Keely Culpepper founded it after nineteen years in the corporate world, carrying her project-management habits into travel, and the effect is a trip planned so thoroughly that all you have to do is live it. Her working belief is that who comes along shapes a trip at least as much as where it goes, and one entry from her log makes the case: a Montana ranch stay with twenty-three close friends.
The mark is what asked for the study. A compass medallion built from eight radial wedges of blue and teal around a small gold center, four slim gold needles finding the cardinal points. Beneath it, BLUE VENTURE in tall navy serif capitals, then “travel” in a connected bright-blue script whose finishing stroke sweeps clean off to the right. Two voices of type above and below one piece of tight radial geometry; a die-maker reads that and starts clearing the bench.
The mark, as found
Pressed
We pressed the mark on Blueberry, which sits close to the navy of the serif capitals, and on Turquoise, which answers the medallion's teal and the coastal water running through their photography. Black carries the gold foil. The script gave us pause. A finishing stroke that long is a hairline, and hairlines like to close up under a press; the renders say it holds, though a cut die will have the final word.
Keepsake memories
Their standing phrase is “Create Keepsake Memories,” and a keepsake wants a container, so we drew one. An open travel locket, hinged like a pocket watch, mountains held in one half and a compass in the other, with CREATE KEEPSAKE MEMORIES set beneath. A week on a ranch with twenty-three friends ends. What you carry home is small enough to press into leather.
