Bold Compass Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
Bold Compass Travel is the practice of Alethea Williamson, a “free-spirited travel advisor driven by wanderlust” by her own biography, a planner of “journeys that awaken the soul.” Her verified specialties run from theme parks to romantic getaways. She believes the journey “should be just as enjoyable as the destination,” and her homepage greets you with three words we kept hearing all month: “Paradise Is Calling”. Our master file places her in Urbandale, Iowa; the page copy we reviewed leaves her town unsaid, so we hold that address lightly.
The mark earned the study on its own. An eight-point compass rose in pale coastal blue sits inside a broken ring, and a single gold needle crosses it from lower-left to upper-right, the heading a pilot would call good news. Beside the device, Bold Compass runs in dark navy brush script over two lines, with small letterspaced gold capitals reading TRAVEL beneath. Brush script is the gambling part of any press, since thin tails like to fill when a die runs hot; hers has the weight to hold.
The mark, as found
Pressed
Pale sea-blue for the ring's coastal blue, warm caramel for the needle's gold; both are pressed blind, so the mark reads as pure relief. On black the whole device goes down in gold foil, and the needle finally glints the way it was drawn to.
The Paradise Line
If paradise is calling, something has to ring. So the companion tag is a vintage rotary desk telephone in bold outline, with a compass rose set where the dial belongs, eight short points around the rim and one long needle crossing to the northeast, the same upper-right her own logo insists on. The handset floats just off the hook, tilted as though someone has already answered, its cord falling in exactly three round loops. Below the base line, letterspaced capitals spell out PARADISE IS CALLING.
