Callisto × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

An August study.

For Callisto.

Their mark as it stands – the thin circle and the faceted constellation figure it holds, CALLISTO in wide serif capitals beneath – pressed blind into navy leather, the shade closest to their own deep blue. The black tag carries the same mark in gold foil, a constellation set at last on its native night sky.

The companion die takes Callisto at its word – “one match at a time” – and draws it as sky: a scatter of stars inside a thin circle, and between two of them the only line in the field.

On the keychains that piece of sky rides in a pocket – once in pale sea-blue, the color of the icy facets in their mark, and once in black. The black fob presses its stars in gold.

On the dopp kits, navy over deep espresso brown, the mark sits small in the lower corner and keeps its meaning to itself – a stranger sees a pretty patch of night, while the hand that packs the bag knows exactly what the line between two stars is for.

A golden tan catchall tray, where the day's scattered points come to rest each evening beneath two that already found each other.

The journals earned a second die: the ruling of a page, and on one rule two stars with the line running between them – because a record is how a single point of light becomes part of a figure. It presses generously in the corner, in navy and in pale warm greige.
