Calyco Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
Calyco Travel is a full-service agency out of Lewis Center, Ohio, and its promise sits right in the line: “Let Our Experience Guide You.” The agents travel three to four times a year themselves, so the guidance comes home with sand still in it. Owner Caryn Coomer has seventeen years of traveling behind her, and when she explains why any of it matters, she skips past the brochures and says travel gives her family uninterrupted time together. That answer stayed with us longer than any itinerary would have.
The wordmark earned the study on its own. Deep-red lowercase letters, rounded and even-tempered, with one quiet joke saved for the end – the final o of calyco holds a tiny globe, a whole world tucked inside a letterform. A mark that hides its meaning in a single counter tends to reward a die, and this one did.

The deep red of the wordmark led us straight to poppy red, and the pale field it sits on led to gray sand. Black is the automatic third and carries the gold foil. One admission from the bench: we kept the small two-line tagline under the wordmark at first, then watched it close up into texture at luggage-tag scale. It came off. The globe survived the shrink just fine.
A beer, a beach, a book
Caryn calls herself a beach lover, and her recipe for the ideal trip arrived at our bench as a finished design brief. We drew it plainly – an umbrella pitched over an open book, a beer standing by – and set A BEER A BEACH A BOOK beneath, in the same easygoing spirit as the wordmark. Whether the beer reads at twenty feet is a fair question; at arm's length, where a luggage tag lives its whole life, it reads perfectly.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
