Chinook Public Schools × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

An August study.

For Chinook Public Schools.

The official Sugarbeeter mark, pressed complete and run lengthwise along the tag – script and mascot together, with "PRIDE. DESIRE. EXCELLENCE." kept letter for letter. Honeyed russet and deep green come straight off the beet and its leafy top. The black tag carries the press in gold.

Our companion mark starts from beet biology: a tuft of leaves above the line, and a whole season's sugar stored below it. That seemed a fair portrait of long work in a small district, where what shows above ground was always the smaller share. The die says it plainly – THE SWEETNESS IS IN THE ROOT – and the keychains wear it in honeyed russet and deep green, the beet and its top.

On the toiletry kits the root sits small in the lower corner, warm amber stacked over dark espresso – the beet resting on its own soil.

The journals take the same die at a generous size, in deep green and black; on the black cover the unfoiled press reads as a quiet shadow. Whatever gets planted after a career in schools still wants a place for notes.

The second die takes the district at its own word – BEETER COMMUNITY. Five crowns keep their own shapes above the line; below it the roots cross and hold the ground together, which is roughly how a school town works. It runs across the base of the golden-tan catchall tray, where the day's pockets empty out.
