Classic Travel Connection × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Classic Travel Connection plans travel from Birmingham, Alabama, under Christen Perry, its owner and travel advisor. The agency's line is “Travel… Beyond the Itinerary,” and its About page opens plainly with “We believe travel should be meaningful.” The case it makes is a domestic one. Time away strengthens relationships and brings families back together, and the memories outlast the trip that made them. Christen's specialties run from destination weddings to family vacations, which is to say the whole span of occasions on which people travel toward each other.

What drew us in was the third word of the name. Thin capitals spell CLASSIC TRAVEL across one line, and CONNECTION sits beneath in much smaller, widely spaced letters. So the word carrying the emotional weight of the whole enterprise is set in the quietest type on the page. We rather admire the modesty of that, though it leaves a die-maker with typography alone, and a stamp wants a form to hold.

The mark this study proposes

We confess an initial reluctance here. Grafting a device onto an elegant type-only identity is delicate surgery, and the travel arc may be the most worn trope in the category. What earned this one its place is where it stops, or declines to. The arc rises over the letterspaced name and carries on past the point where a flight path would land. It is the brand line drawn as geometry, an itinerary ending where itineraries end while the line keeps going. Pressed lengthwise on a tag, it reads at arm's length before the name does.

Pressed

Dark espresso answers the black-brown of their editorial type, and gray-sand picks up the soft cream of the page behind it. Black carries the gold.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
