Destination Your World × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
Destination Your World is a full-service travel agency in Beaverton, Oregon. Roger Patteson opened it in 2009; Erica joined him in 2014, and the site now names the two of them together as owners and partners. They build international itineraries and river-and-ocean cruises, with a declared fondness for the once-in-a-lifetime kind, and their homepage puts the whole ambition in six lowercase words: “think extraordinary. explore your world”.
The mark did the asking. A fine gold globe sits centered on the Americas, crossed by two thin orbital ellipses, and a small passenger jet rides the lower-left arc, flying down and away. It is a drawn, owned device, which is rarer in travel than it should be, and it arrives already gold – near the exact antique shade our foil wants to be. The only trouble was size. Their site serves the art at 154 pixels wide, so we redrew it faithfully at stamping resolution before any leather was harmed.
The mark, as found
Pressed
Warm caramel and pale gray-sand take the blind press, the pair their antique gold and airy cream pages suggested. Black carries the gold foil. We did worry about the orbit lines; strokes that thin can press shallow and read as scratches. In the renders they hold, though a real die might want them a touch heavier.
Ship in orbit
Their about page keeps returning to river and ocean cruising, while the logo gives all the motion to a jet. So we traded aircraft for hull. One plain bold globe, empty of continents; a single orbital ellipse tilted low on the left, ducking behind the globe at the upper right and passing in front at the lower left. On that forward arc sails a small single-funneled liner in side profile, pushing a short bow wave – riding the ellipse like a shipping lane, exactly where their jet flies, with dashes of wake trailing up the curve behind it. Underneath, one line of plain capitals: EXPLORE YOUR WORLD, the half of their tagline a luggage tag can keep.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
