Destinations Travel Advisors × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Destinations Travel Advisors describes itself as a “boutique agency for the world traveler,” and works out of New Orleans, Louisiana. Founder Joe Casciola entered the trade more than forty years ago, at a small luxury agency he joined while attending LSU; a decade and more with American Airlines followed before he opened his own advisory. His official biography calls him a “road warrior,” and the early record earns the phrase – complex around-the-world corporate itineraries were part of the job back when routing them still took a human hand. Rebecca joined in 2012 after years with Princess Cruises and works as a Certified Travel Advisor.

The mark made the case for this study on its own. At the left sits a small black compass rose inside a thin broken circle, its long needle pointing east; bold capitals carry the name beside it, with a lighter gray line beneath. A compass belongs on a thing that travels. Our one obstacle was size: the best file we could recover is 170 pixels wide, so we redrew the mark at high resolution and kept comparing it against the source until the fine cardinal ticks sat where they should.

Warm country gray follows the light gray of the supporting line, and dark espresso answers the near-black compass in the classic leather of old travel kit. Black takes the gold foil.

“DO. SEE. EXPERIENCE.”

Their homepage compresses the whole pitch into three words, each granted a full stop. We gave the phrase a portrait companion: a compass with three needles, one bearing per word, so the motto reads like a heading you could steer by. Brevity of that order is die-safe; longer taglines rarely survive the press.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
