Eat Drink Vacations × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Eat Drink Vacations is a boutique full-service agency for culinary and beverage travel, run by Leila Peverett Coe, CTA, an advisor with more than twenty-four years in the trade; public press places her in Orlando, Florida. She is a first-generation American with family in England, and she has been crossing the Atlantic since she was a baby. As a child she made her own guidebooks. The trade came later, by way of theme-park admissions and travel school, and her biography now counts every continent, Antarctica included. She calls herself a lifelong vegetarian whose interests run to wine and breweries, pasta and potatoes, which tells you the eating and drinking in the name are meant quite literally.

The name is already its own itinerary. EAT over DRINK over VACATIONS, heavy condensed capitals in ochre gold on a red-orange field, boxed in a thick border of the same gold. A stacked wordmark like this behaves beautifully under a die; the letters are wide enough to hold a deep deboss, and the border gives the stamp a natural edge. We wanted it in leather the moment we saw it. Whether the red field or the gold frame should lead the leather choice took us longer to settle than we expected.

The mark, as found

Poppy red comes straight from the badge's saturated field, and indian summer picks up the warm ochre of its border and lettering. Black carries the mark in gold foil.

The world, plated

For the companion we drew the globe as a dinner plate, laid between a fork and a knife, with the stacked name set underneath. Someone who has eaten on every continent, Antarctica among them, has earned a place setting that size. In leather the fine meridian lines will soften a little; on the renders they read cleanly.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
