Edify Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Edify Travel plans journeys from Las Vegas, Nevada, under a stated promise of “Personalized travel service in the digital age.” The digital age is the newer half of that sentence. The older half begins in 1977, when a travel agency opened its doors in Hales Corners and South Milwaukee, two suburbs on the edge of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The family of those first owners stayed with the trade, building careers in travel and hospitality, and in time folded marketing and technology into the inheritance. Edify is what the halves make together: agency judgment carried forward on evolving tools.

The mark is why we picked up the die. Their lowercase e runs as one broad green loop, and the upper terminal keeps going, sharpening into an arrowhead as it leaves the letter; a second small tail flicks off at the lower left. At a glance it is a letter. Hold it a second longer and a ringed planet appears, with traffic in orbit, which for a travel company is about as much as a single character can be asked to do.

Pressed

Forest green meets the device on its own bright ground, and blueberry answers the deep navy of Edify's supporting travel graphics. Black takes the mark in gold. The arrowhead worried us at this scale; a terminal that fine can smear under a die. It held.

The lighthouse

Edify's About page offers a second picture of the work: “your lighthouse in the ocean of travel.” We took the phrase at its word and drew the lamp, sending three signal arcs above the line YOUR LIGHTHOUSE / IN THE OCEAN OF TRAVEL. Arcs deboss cleanly; whether a beam of light can keep its warmth once it becomes a groove in leather is a question the render only half settles.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
