Essential Romance Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Essential Romance Travel is the Lawrence, Kansas practice of Sophia Albert, a travel advisor who plans honeymoons and once-in-a-lifetime trips for couples across the United States. Her current headline reads “Travel planning for moments worth slowing down for.” On her About page she goes further, writing that a trip is rarely only about the destination: “It’s about how the trip feels while you’re there.”

Sophia’s route to Kansas ran through Las Vegas, where a job with a luxury travel company in 2019 changed how she thought about the work; she started her own practice to make planning more personal and thoughtful. Her dog Linq sleeps under the desk while the itineraries take shape. What asked for the study, though, was the mark. A single black italic capital E, custom-drawn, leans hard to the right, and its top hairline runs left before continuing right into a fine squared corner, a thin vertical dropping at the far edge. One letter carries the whole romantic practice, which is a rare kind of restraint, and we wanted to see it in leather.

Pressed

Blush follows the pale rose-peach light of her photography, and dark espresso answers the black editorial monogram that anchors it. Black carries the gold foil. We pressed the E portrait. That squared hairline corner worried us; a line this fine is where a die either sings or clogs. In these renders it holds, though on the espresso it sits a shade quieter than we would like.

Worth slowing down for

The companion design runs lengthwise, so it took the long face of the tag. A snail ambles along with a suitcase on its shell, above the words WORTH SLOWING DOWN FOR, lifted straight from her headline. It is the slowest traveler we could think of, and it packs its whole house anyway.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
