Funshine Destinations × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Funshine Destinations plans vacations from Derry, New Hampshire, as an affiliate of Nexion Travel Group. Their homepage carries the title “Every Journey Sparkles,” and the heading beneath it promises “Your Passport to Paradise Starts Here.” The site holds that extraordinary vacations begin with careful planning, and its service statement closes on a line with its shirt tucked in: “Tailored travel. Trusted guidance. Total peace of mind.” An advisor profile connected to the practice tells us the founder, Andrea Davis, once lived and studied in Málaga, and we pass that along because the mark looks drawn by someone who has squinted into real Mediterranean light.

The mark did the asking. An orange sun in black sunglasses grins over two cyan wave strokes, with FUNSHINE standing beside it in bold charcoal capitals and DESTINATIONS letterspaced beneath. Closed shapes, honest line weights; it already behaves like a die. The only source we could recover measures 275 by 100 pixels, so a faithful redraw at pressing scale came first. We kept our own hand out of it as far as we could, though whether the person who drew that grin would spot ours is a question we left open.

Two leathers stepped straight out of the art: honeyed indian summer for that grinning sun, and turquoise for the waves it rides. Black takes the whole mark in gold foil. We tried the charcoal letterforms on both grounds first; they go quiet on dark leather, and the foil answers for them.

Passport to paradise

Their heading says “Your Passport to Paradise Starts Here,” so we took them at their word and drew the stamp such a passport would collect. The sunglasses sun and its twin waves sit inside a round border reading YOUR PASSPORT TO PARADISE above and STARTS HERE below, pressed portrait. If paradise ran a customs desk, this is the ink we imagine on the counter.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
