GoSaggio × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

GoSaggio is a luxury travel agency in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Brie Matter founded it after seventeen years in digital advertising, years in which her own work and her husband's technology role kept her traveling, and in which she was already planning trips on the side. Moonlighting, she calls it. Eventually the side practice took the whole desk, and the agency now trades in what an advisor gathers firsthand: “Best Of” recommendations for the restaurants worth a detour and the five-star stays that earn the stars.

The mark is what pulled us in. GoSaggio's logo is a small suitcase in smoky blue-gray with its handle raised; GO is packed inside the case where it belongs, and SAGGIO runs out to the right. Underneath, in wide quiet tracking, sits TRAVEL. A travel mark drawn as a piece of luggage, pressed into a tag made to hang from luggage – a study rarely closes its own circle so neatly.

Pressed

Country gray is the closest leather we keep to the mark's own smoky blue-gray, and pale sea-blue answers from the brighter, coastal end of the same cool register. Black carries the gold. The tags are cut portrait, so the little case stands upright, as though set down for a moment beside the real one. We expected the sea-blue to quarrel with a blue-gray device; it turned out the friendliest of the set, while the country gray, our safe pick, wanted a deeper press before the case read clean.

Planned by moonlight

The companion design goes back to how the agency began. One crescent above one blank suitcase, and under them the line PLANNED BY MOONLIGHT. The case is blank this time, latched shut and waiting under the moon that watched those early itineraries get written. We like a design that admits when the work got done.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
