Great Plains Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Great Plains Travel plans bucket-list vacations and cruises for families, working from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with advisors spread across the United States. Allyssa Arouri, founder and senior travel advisor, states the promise plainly: “Bucket List Travel, Expertly Planned.” A family brings a dream, and the practice carries every detail from the first call to the flight home. We liked the name before we liked the logo. It plants a flag in prairie geography and then points everywhere else.

The mark earns the study on its own. A pin drops over North America and a dashed route arcs up past the rim of a ringed globe, where a small airplane climbs away toward the corner of the frame. Beneath the globe a curved navy banner carries the name in white capitals. The whole drawing is a trip planned before it is taken, which is roughly the job description.

Blueberry follows the deep navy of the ring and banner, and turquoise answers the pale, lit blues of the globe. Black carries the gold foil. The live logo is gradient-lit and layered, which gave us pause, since a die wants a single clean depth. So the landforms simplify, while the pin still finds the airplane along its dashed line and the banner still crosses the lower globe. Whether the simplification loses anything real, Allyssa can judge better than we can.

Expertly planned

The second design takes their line at its word. A checklist climbs out of a bucket, and overhead the same dashed route hands the trip off to an airplane above the words EXPERTLY PLANNED. A bucket with a list in it is a simple joke, and simple jokes press cleanly.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
