Jenny Carson Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Jenny Carson Travel is one advisor's practice, and the training behind it is the story. Jenny Carson spent 28 years as a licensed physical therapist. Her own page counts more than 30 years of personal travel, with the last 20 of them spent building custom itineraries for other people. The same page records 51 years of personal experience with autism, experience she has carried into certification as an Autism Travel Professional. The inclusive, premium trips she designs are shaped around the person who will take them. Her homepage currently tells visitors that her books are closed to new clients; a full practice earns that sign, and we pressed her mark anyway, for the pleasure of it.

The mark asked for this study on sight. A tall charcoal serif spells JENNY, and a fine handwritten Carson trails after it like a signature on a fitting slip. Below the name, a muted teal bar sets “BOUTIQUE TRAVEL” in white letterspaced capitals. A hairline frame holds it all together. Those pale script strokes worried us; we checked our pressure twice before we trusted the plate.

Cool country gray took the mark's charcoal restraint, and pale sea-blue answered the teal of the title bar. Black carries the gold foil, as it should.

The Fitting

Twenty years of itineraries cut to the traveler's measure sounded like tailoring to us, so the companion became a fitting. One classic suitcase seen straight-on, with a tailor's measuring tape draped across its face on the diagonal, loose ends hanging off the corners as if the work had paused mid-measure. The tape carries plain tick marks, a longer one every fifth, and beneath the case runs a single letterspaced line, “BOUTIQUE TRAVEL”. We tried the tape level first and it read as a strap; the diagonal took two more sketches than we would like to admit. The tempting globe and the airplane stayed in the drawer.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
