Leaps and Bounds Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Leaps and Bounds Travel plans journeys from Windham, New Hampshire, and the homepage gives the reason in six words: “We share our love for travel.” Their story promises a team present from first contact through homecoming, and the special touches they name are pleasingly physical – travel documents delivered by hand, a proper send-off at the cruise ship. An agency that still walks paper to your door believes in objects. So do we.

The mark earned the study on its own. A tall compass rose grows a mast and a triangular sail, so the instrument that finds the way becomes the vessel that goes. Beside it, stacked high-contrast serifs spell LEAPS & BOUNDS, with TRAVEL letterspaced in a small bar beneath. The artwork is white and lives on deep navy, which means the brand already thinks in one color on a dark ground; a deboss in leather asks for exactly that.

The mark, as found

Pressed lengthwise

Blueberry takes the deboss much as their navy header takes the white art, and gray-sand keeps the quiet of their pale page. Black carries the mark in gold foil.

The skipping sailboat

Their name describes motion, so we drew the motion. A waterline carries three small wave curls, the second gap wider than the first, because the bounds are growing. Two dashed arcs skip between them the way a well-thrown stone does – a low hop, then a bigger bound – and at the apex of the bigger arc rides a small sailboat with a crescent hull and one tall sail borrowed from their compass device, bow lifted mid-leap. We tried the boat sitting on the waterline first; it read as moored. Up at the apex it finally leapt. Below the water, LEAPS & BOUNDS in plain capitals.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
