Lighthouse Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Lighthouse Travel plans trips from Camanche, Iowa, with a second desk in Cedar Falls. The agency opened in 1985 booking cruises alone, a stretch it still warmly calls its “Love Boat” phase, and in 1997 it widened into a full-service shop. These days it leans toward all-inclusives in the Caribbean and Mexico, destination weddings, and so on, under a line we admire for its plainness: “We Go So You Know”. An agent who has walked the ship before you board it is making a modest, checkable promise, and forty years of it will earn a town's trust.

The mark is what stopped us. A black capital L doubles as the base of a lighthouse, the tower wearing one broad white diagonal and one narrow red, while a palm curves in from the right and lays its fronds over the whole affair. Somebody sat with that drawing until several ideas agreed to share a single silhouette, and small-town agencies rarely get emblems with that much patience in them. It asked to be pressed.

The mark, as found

Forest green takes its cue from the layered palm fronds, and poppy red answers the single red stripe on the tower. Black carries the gold foil.

We Go So You Know

Their emblem already says lighthouse, so the companion tells the other story their About page hands you. A 1985 cruise ship passes one continuous route line to a 1997 airplane, the whole voyage drawn without lifting the pen, set lengthwise above WE GO SO YOU KNOW. We went back and forth on the star where the line changes hands, then kept it; a route wants a fixed light to steer by, and this agency has been one since the Love Boat years.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
