Loree’s Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

A July study.
Loree’s Travel works the older way of the trade, where a trip begins with a person across the table. The site gives you the name in plain capitals with one borrowed line beneath it, and a button for scheduling a consultation; everything else is kept for the conversation. The line is “The Journey Of A Thousand Miles”, which any reader of Laozi will recognize as half a sentence. The Tao Te Ching finishes the thought – such a journey begins under your feet, with a single step – and the site leaves that half unsaid. We choose to read the omission as an invitation: the step is the hour you schedule.
A current trade profile places the desk in Post Falls, Idaho, though the site itself keeps quiet about geography, and about much else; a Loree Johnson advises there, and the possessive in the name does the honest work of a shingle. What asked for this study was the bareness of the mark. LOREE’S TRAVEL exists only as uppercase page type, with no drawn device anywhere on the site, and a wordmark that quotes the most famous sentence ever written about beginnings seemed to us to deserve a beginning of its own.

The mark this study proposes
Two ruled lines converge on a vanishing point – a long road drawn with a straightedge – and where they meet stands a small milestone cut with the figure 1000. The name sits beneath the road, with the full line, THE JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES, running wide below it like a lintel. We tried the road empty first and it read as loneliness; the stone gives the eye somewhere to arrive. A milestone is a modest object for so large a proverb, which felt correct, since Laozi’s whole argument is that long journeys are built from modest units. Portrait, because a road wants height.
Pressed
Blueberry and gray-sand carry the brand’s own weather, the one taking after the blue water in the site’s photography and the other its pale, quiet grounds. Black with gold foil closes the set, as it does in every study of this series.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
