Three luggage-tag studies for Maxcare

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world organizations.

An August study.

Home, light, and the dignity of choosing one’s own way

Maxcare, Inc. supports New Mexicans with developmental disabilities through homes, supported living, customized community supports, and leisure activities. Its public mission centers on self-selected lifestyles, independence, personal choice, and growth in community. The homepage states the promise plainly: it is not just a place to live, but a place to call home.

The current public surface uses turquoise, deep sky blue, sunrise amber, field green, bold uncomplicated type, and a wide New Mexico horizon. Rather than invent an institutional badge, these independent studies translate the mission and landscape into ordinary household objects. They do not reproduce the Maxcare name, initials, medical marks, diagnostic symbols, puzzle pieces, a heart-in-hands charity emblem, or any image that makes the people served look passive. The ingredients become a front door open to sunrise, a porch light switched on, and a key whose teeth are three modest front steps.

As leather luggage tags, the studies could be considered for approved employee tenure, direct-support staff recognition, partner organizations, training cohorts, community collaborators, conferences, and year-end occasions. The pictures emphasize agency and belonging rather than care as a one-way act: a door someone can open, a light that welcomes them, and a key that remains in their own hand.

Leather and treatment

Deep teal, warm tan, and moss leather translate the landscape into a quiet material family. Tonal debossing keeps the home imagery practical and unshowy. A restrained antique-brass line on moss gives one celebratory treatment suited to a service milestone without turning the study into a clinical or charity badge.

The three concepts

1. Door Open to Sunrise

A plain architectural doorway stands open on a half-sun and three short rays. It is immediately a new morning through an open door; the second read connects Maxcare’s public horizon to the freedom of choosing what comes next.

2. Porch Light On

A simple wall bracket holds one glowing porch lantern. Seven broad rays turn the homepage sunrise rhythm into lamplight—the small domestic signal that a place is ready to welcome someone home.

3. Key with Front Steps

A single house key ends in three square teeth shaped like front steps. The object stays familiar and useful while quietly joining personal access, independence, and the ordinary approach to one’s own home.

These are independent design studies for appropriate team, partner, collaborator, adviser, vendor, volunteer, or client occasions. No affiliation, approval, or endorsement is implied. Every image is a render used to test the object before cutting a physical die.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual.
