Carry a Little Magic: Leather Travel Talismans for Ordinary Magic
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

Ordinary Magic sells intention, and everything on its Savannah shelves seems arranged to honor that. Tourists drift in from Forsyth Park, spiritually curious and glad to be charmed; behind them stands a devoted local practice community that returns on purpose. In a shop like that, an ordinary object changes meaning at the door. A luggage tag leaves the counter as a travel talisman, a small promise buckled to a bag, and that reading is the seed of this study.
The shelf sets its own rules, and we tried to obey them. Gifting under $30 drives the store, so these tags are drawn to retail at $24–$28 and to be understood in the few seconds a browsing hand allows. Each design names its intention in plain letters, warm and legible, so the buyer wishing protection on a traveling daughter can read it at a glance. Savannah at night supplies the imagery – the moss on the oaks and the moths under the lanterns – softened until the eeriness feels kind.
Carry a Little Magic
Carry a Little Magic is one drawing language across six tags. We call it a talisman woodcut: soft-edged, symmetrical forms that sit like charms in the leather – a moth here, a winged key there, and so on – each paired with a short intention in small, serene caps. Every charm is our own invention, secular-magical and made new for this capsule alone. Black and Lilac carry the set as hero leathers. Blueberry and Forest Green deepen the nocturne, and Blush warms it.
Under the Moss
Two live-oak trunks frame the sides of the tag and their canopy joins overhead, while three thick, tapered strands of moss drop into the open center. SAVANNAH sits at the base in small letterspaced caps. It is the destination image the whole city trades on, redrawn as a charm for the first-timer, and Forest Green leather makes the tag feel cut from the canopy.
Travel Safe
The capsule's thesis in leather. A large vertical skeleton key carries two rounded, chunky wings at its bow; a small four-point star marks the tip, and TRAVEL SAFE sits in small caps beneath. Protection stamped onto the exact object that does the traveling is, we think, the purest expression of what the shop already promises its worried gift buyers. Black, the first hero leather, gives the charm its lantern-dark ground.
Come Home Lucky
An upturned horseshoe, points raised so the luck stays held, wears five bold nail dots along its curve. One fat star floats in the cradle, and COME HOME LUCKY runs in two lines below. It is the blessing anyone can give – a friend, a whole wedding party – and Blush leather keeps it exactly that sweet.
Night Moth
The wordless one, and likely the icon. A chunky, symmetrical moth fills the tag on simple two-panel wings, a single crescent moon carried on its back. We kept the wings free of fine patterning so the form still reads as a charm from across the room. Lilac, the second hero leather, was chosen for this design before any other; Savannah's nocturne and the old promise of transformation meet here without a word of copy.
Luck, Bottled
A round-bellied bottle with a fat cork holds one bold star suspended in the glass; three tiny sparks rise around the neck, and LUCK sits in small caps beneath. This one points straight at the shop's spell-jar bar, a take-home echo of the ritual made in-store, drawn for the workshop attendee who wants the evening to travel with them. Blueberry leather tints the glass midnight.
The Magic Is Ordinary
One oversized match stands vertical, its chunky teardrop flame ringed by two short radiance strokes, with THE MAGIC IS ORDINARY set small beneath. It is the wildcard of the six and the shop's whole philosophy in the humblest object we could draw; we suspect regulars will buy it for their own keys as often as for anyone else's bag. Black leather again, because the plainest charm earns the hero ground.
A first counter edit
Thirty tags make the opening edit we would propose, weighted the way the shelf reasons. Seven of Travel Safe and six of Night Moth put the heroes deepest. Five of Under the Moss meet the Forsyth Park foot traffic, and four each of the remaining three designs round out the count without tying up the counter. At $24–$28 retail the whole assortment stays inside the gifting habit the store already runs on, which keeps a first order low-risk by design. For the staff, one sentence carries the set: "Leather travel talismans – hand-stamped charms like the winged key and the night moth, each carrying one travel intention." We hold the middle rankings loosely; a tourist shelf can surprise you, and a first reorder will say more than our reasoning does.
