OUTWARDEN × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

A September study.

For OUTWARDEN.

A special study this time. OUTWARDEN is a brand-new name for a compact wheeled robot that patrols outdoor spaces, and it arrived with a blank slate where the identity should be. So we designed the whole thing: eight independent directions, each carried from the full logo down to app-icon size, and every one pressed into leather.

First, the line itself. We drew the property boundary as one unbroken rounded rectangle, set OUTWARDEN inside it, and placed a single dot on the line at the corner – the warden, mid-round.

In color it runs deep warden green with a lone marker-lime dot; the mini mark is just the line and the dot.

Pressed into deep green leather, the boundary holds. It looks genuinely beautiful.

And on the machine – a patrol robot of our own imagining, standing in for hardware we have never seen – the line wraps the body unbroken, dot at the leading corner.

Next, we let the O do the watching. A sixty-degree wedge sweeps from its center to its rim, a lighthouse beam frozen mid-turn, and the O alone becomes the app mark.

Black is the one leather that carries the gold, so the sweep takes the gold pass on a black tag.

On the robot, again interpretive and ours alone, the wedge rides the front panel and announces which way the machine is looking.

Then the oldest badge in the trade. We redrew the watchman's lantern in flat geometry – a diamond of flame inside a glazed body – and hung it over a slab-serif OUTWARDEN.

Night black and lamp amber; the app mark is the lantern alone.

Blind-debossed into honeyed russet leather, the lamp glows with no ink at all.

The livery paints our imagined robot as the night watch: black body, amber lantern at the prow, an amber beacon echoing the flame. Interpretive, like every machine on this page.

The fourth direction remembers who held this job first. A seated hound, ear up, built from circles and one straight chest line – the yard dog's warmth for a machine that shares sidewalks with the public.

Field tan and charcoal; the head alone makes the app mark.

And worn as a badge on the front of our interpretive machine, it reads exactly as intended – a good dog on its rounds.

WARDEN is a castle word, so we gave it battlements: a shield with a crenellated crown, the W inside rising to meet the center merlon.

In deep wine leather the shield sits like a pressed seal.

Then we stacked the name across a horizon: OUT in the sky, WARDEN on the ground, and one disc resting on the rule between them – sun or moon, whichever the hour brings.

Terracotta over dawn sand; the mini mark is the disc on its line.

The seventh direction turns the route into the mark: a dashed patrol loop with a node at every corner, the current position drawn large, and the name set below like a map label.

Survey-map colors – ink navy on chart cream, one route-red position.

Pressed into navy leather, the loop reads like a chart of the night's rounds.

And finally, the one we kept coming back to. Look at the W – two ear tufts, two eyes hung in its valleys. An owl has been living inside WARDEN all along, and it works the night shift.

Owl umber and moon gray, with one iris of quiet gold; the W flies solo as the app mark.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
