OUTWARDEN × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

A September study.

For OUTWARDEN.

We drew four guardian hounds for the same machine. Every vehicle image below is a proposed sticker/livery mockup on the actual photographed robot, set in a representative UK commercial yard.

First, THE SENTINEL. We planted a heavy hound four-square over a ground bar cut to the exact width of the name – one solid black mass with a calm white eye. The wager here is that a security buyer trusts weight that stands quietly. On the panels it rides in warm amber over deep navy.

Pressed blind into the navy leather, it looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, THE LOOKOUT. We drew a seated hound in a single unbroken line, ears up and chin lifted, and set it in a roundel with the name along the arc. This is the calmer read, for the yard where drivers and visitors pass the machine at arm's length – soft cream on deep pine green, and a deep green leather for the journal test.

Then, THE VECTOR. We built the head alone from large angular black planes, ears pricked, the eye a single white cut – a mark sized for an app avatar and a moving panel alike. It wears signal orange on near-black graphite, and on the true black journal the blind deboss reads as a quiet shadow relief.

And finally, THE NIGHTWATCH. An engraved plate in which a lean hound on a low rise turns to look back over its shoulder against a plain white moon, the name reversed out of the base bar. It is the most literary of the four and asks the longest second look – ink midnight and parchment on the robot, pale warm greige leather for the journal.

The engraving looks great when pressed into the pale greige.

If we had to choose – and we offer this as a hunch for review – the Sentinel carries the procurement conversation best, while the Lookout is the one a driver nods to on the way past. All four remain on the table, and printed panel stickers keep the choice cheap to change.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
