Plans in Paradise × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Plans in Paradise works out of Cambridge, Wisconsin, where Stephanee Hughson, its president, has spent more than fifteen years in travel and events. The business grew from her own love of going places, and it joins wedding coordination to travel planning under one roof; she will arrange a honeymoon or an off-the-beaten-path adventure with the same steady hand. She holds that if a client can dream it, Plans in Paradise can make it real.

The mark is what stopped us. A loose black script says Travel, with the small line “by plans in paradise” beneath it, and a green palm rises out of the final letters as if the word had taken root. Behind the words sits a circular field of pale green and beige watercolor dots. Watercolor belongs to water; a steel die presses line and letter, so the dots stay on the page and the leather supplies the ground. To be exact about scope, we pressed the Travel lockup alone, since the Weddings mark is a sibling with its own claims. One worry followed us through the work: the source art is 210 pixels wide, and at that size the byline is delicate, so we read it letter by letter against the original before trusting any render, and we would read it again before cutting steel.

Pressed

Forest green was decided before we opened the drawer, a direct match for the palm and for the green dots we left behind; blush answers the pale field with a softness any wedding coordinator would recognize. Black, as ever, carries the script in gold.

The paradise plan

Every itinerary begins as a drawing, so we drew paradise the way a planner might file it. A single palm stands on a small island while dimension lines measure the trunk and the shade it throws; PLANS IN PARADISE runs beneath in drafting capitals. Blueprint humor, delivered with a straight face.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
