Rest or Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
Rest or Travel is Carrie Rester's travel practice in Gulfport, Mississippi. Her current profile counts thirty-eight countries explored across six years in the trade, with elegant European itineraries and private yacht charters among her specialties, and it promises journeys that combine “luxury, authenticity and ease.” The name is what stopped us. Rest or Travel puts a real decision on the sign above the door, and every trip she plans is a vote on it.
The mark takes the question seriously. The name flows in black hand-lettered script, long loops on the R and the T, and the O of Or sits inside a fully drawn compass, cardinal star and all. The one word where the decision lives is the one that gets the instrument. We have pressed plenty of script and plenty of emblems; a mark that tucks the emblem inside its own grammar is rarer, and a dial with double inner rings and radiating ticks is a genuine test for a die. Some of those ticks will thicken under the press, and we were curious how far the drawing could shrink before the compass stopped reading as one.

The lockup runs the long way on gray-sand and country gray, two quiet neutrals that keep faith with the black-on-white original. Black carries it in gold foil.

Or, answered
For the companion we let the compass rule on the question in the name. A portrait tag, the dial drawn plain, and the needle settled on TRAVEL with REST left waiting at the far end of the arc. Thirty-eight countries in, we suspect Carrie called it the same way long ago.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
