Sandy Pointe Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

A July study.

Sandy Pointe Travel is Dawn Taylor's agency in Grand Island, Nebraska. She spent years as a road warrior first. Those years, she says, taught her the pleasures of travel and its frustrations in equal measure, and the practice she runs now builds custom trips for families and couples, with the planning kept personal and fitted to the people who will actually take them.

The name drew us in. Grand Island sits about as far from a coast as an American town can, yet the words Sandy Pointe put a shoreline in our heads at once, a spit of pale ground running out to a tip. We should be honest that the picture is ours; Dawn keeps the name's origin to herself, so far as we can find, and the current identity, thin widely spaced capitals over simple rules, stays silent on the question. A treatment that quiet leaves a maker room to work.

The mark this study proposes

Our first sketch drew the point as a line, and it went thin the way the existing type is thin, which felt like doubling a weakness. So the headland became a solid block, and over it we laid a dashed route of the kind old atlases use, arriving exactly at the sharp point above SANDY POINTE TRAVEL. A journey that lands somewhere precise seemed right for a planner to own, though we still wonder whether the tip could stand to sharpen further.

Pressed

We pressed the study lengthwise on pale gray-sand and on country gray, a pair that follows the name on one hand and the site's restrained monochrome on the other. Black carries the gold foil, and there the dashed route reads like runway lights after dark.
