Smith Luxury Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Smith Luxury Travel is Joanne Smith’s advisory practice in New Milford, Connecticut. She gave twenty-five years to finance before turning travel advisor in 2015, and her own line for the second act is “Maximizing Life’s Moments Through Travel”. The moments she names are wonderfully particular. A helicopter over Milford Sound. Swimming near sea lions in the Galápagos, and a safari in southern Africa that finishes on a beach. We confess a fondness for the fact that an advisor from New Milford keeps Milford Sound among her favorites; some names seem to follow a person around.

The mark earned this study on its own. A forest-green capital S wraps a navy globe, and a small airplane climbs a curved route across the upper-right edge. Beside the device, SMITH stands in large navy serif capitals with Luxury Travel set smaller beneath. Somebody built this lockup deliberately, and deliberate drawing is exactly what a stamp wants.

The mark, as found

Deep forest green follows the big green S and the safari side of her story, and blueberry follows the navy of the globe and the serif wordmark. Black carries the gold foil.

From ledger to flight path

The companion design borrows her biography whole. A chart line climbs the way her charts must have climbed for a quarter century, then breaks into a three-dash flight path with a small airplane at the top, all above MAXIMIZING LIFE’S MOMENTS. Dashed routes are thin work for a deboss; we thickened the strokes in the stamp drawing and still wonder whether the smallest dash will hold at tag scale. A cut die will settle it.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
