Saint Augustine Public Montessori School × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For Saint Augustine Public Montessori School.

For the warm-up, we redrew the school's mark and pressed it on the luggage tags – a deep forest green straight out of the logo and a warm caramel the color of classroom wood. The black tag carries the gold.

Next, the line the school gives its families: "the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence." We grew a young tree whose canopy opens into two feathered wings, with roots spread just as wide below the ground – one gift above, one below. It sits in the corner of the toiletry bags, caramel over dark espresso.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Then, Montessori's shortest instruction to every adult in the room. Six small footprints climb the keychain fob and walk off the top edge, and FOLLOW THE CHILD stands at the bottom, two steps behind – in forest green and caramel.

Keychains with the little footprints look just awesome.

In a Montessori room every material returns to its own spot on the open shelf, so we gave the catchall tray a shelf of its own – solids on top, beads and a small pitcher below, A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING underneath. A catchall is the grown-up version of putting your work away.

And finally, the golden beads. One bead, a bar of ten, a square of a hundred, a cube of a thousand – math that begins in the hand and ends in the mind. We pressed the ascent into the corner of the journals, golden tan and deep forest green, where the abstract work eventually lands.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
