St. John's Episcopal Church, Olney × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For St. John's Episcopal Church, Olney.

First, we designed a little logo for you. It turned out amazing. The name stands alone in clean capitals on the parish site, so we gave it a house – the 1845 church front, doors standing open, above the name and the founding year.

We pressed it small into the corner of the toiletry bags, warm tan over deep brown.

Next, the name exactly as the parish writes it – for the record, and for the warm-up on the luggage tags. Deep wine and warm tan, with a black tag alongside. The black tag carries the gold.

Then, the palm cross. St. John's has been the home of African Palms USA since 1976, and crosses handwoven in Masasi, Tanzania pass through Olney on their way into the world. We drew one the way it is folded – two palm strips crossing over and under – and set MASASI TO OLNEY beneath.

A palm cross is made to be carried, so it went on the keychains, deep green and warm tan – the palm's own colors. Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

After that, our favorite piece of parish history. In 1910 the whole church was rolled to its present site on logs behind a mule team, and it has stood there ever since. We drew it mid-journey.

It went onto the catchall tray at full size, in golden tan. It looks genuinely beautiful.

And finally, the call from the homepage – "CALLED BY CHRIST IN LOVE, TO LIVE IN TRUTH AND ACTION." We stacked the words that carry it beneath a small cross and pressed the column into the journals, deep wine and pale sand. A journal is where truth gets written down and action gets planned.
