Suburban Travel Agency × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Suburban Travel Agency plans trips from North Providence, Rhode Island, where its advisors have gathered more than fifty years of travel-planning experience between them. Christy Young accounts for over twenty-five of those years on her own. The promise on their homepage is exact and modest: “We do the planning for you.” We liked that sentence the moment we read it, because it describes our trade too; a die is a plan, pressed into leather. What drew us in was the name. The site sets SUBURBAN TRAVEL AGENCY in plain template capitals, and a firm that has routed half a century of journeys seemed to us to deserve a mark it could call home.

The mark this study proposes

A dashed route sets out from a small house and crosses the width of the tag to a destination pin, with SUBURBAN TRAVEL AGENCY and WE DO THE PLANNING FOR YOU set lengthwise beneath it. Every dash is drawn before the journey begins, which is the whole business in one line. We tried the pin alone first and it read like any map application; the little house is what makes the mark theirs, since a suburban agency's routes all begin at somebody's front door.

Blueberry follows the deep navy of the site's navigation and gray-sand follows its pale, unhurried backgrounds. Black takes the gold foil.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
