The Happy Suitcase × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
The Happy Suitcase plans luxury travel from Louisville, Kentucky. The site introduces Alison as a “Luxury Travel Advisor in Louisville, KY specializing in Europe,” and the homepage bears that out with bespoke itineraries across Europe and beyond, luxury river and ocean cruises included. The planning leans on firsthand destination experience; the advisors have walked the places they send you. Their welcome line is the one we kept rereading – “Your great travel story starts here.”
We press marks into luggage tags for a living, so a travel advisory named after a suitcase was always going to find its way onto our bench. There were smaller reasons too. The mark pairs a location-pin outline with the wordmark, a small lowercase “the” tucked against HAPPY SUITCASE in bold capitals. And their pages pull type from Typekit – a detail most visitors will never notice, and a quiet tell that somebody there weighs letterforms. We weigh them in brass, so we felt understood.

Pressed
The wordmark went into blueberry, after the deep blue of their site header, and into gray-sand, after the pale, unhurried ground of their pages. Black with gold foil completes the set.
The Grinning Case
Pressed lengthwise, THE GRINNING CASE is one vintage hard-shell suitcase drawn straight on, with a sturdy handle arched over its top edge and a rounded cap guarding each corner. The two latch rivets sit where eyes would, and a single bold arc below them does the smiling. Beneath the case runs their own line in plain capitals: YOUR GREAT TRAVEL STORY STARTS HERE. We sketched travel stickers onto the shell and scraped them off again; a face this simple reads better bare.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
