The Journey Group Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

The Journey Group Travel is a collective of professional travel advisors working out of Boca Raton, Florida, whose team has explored more than 100 countries firsthand. Founder Laura Sangster grounds the practice, in the team's own words, in responsible and meaningful travel, and the founding story reads like one of their itineraries. A six-month trip through Central America in 1999 set her on the professional path; she completed American Express Travel School and launched her first website in 2001. The young agency traded as Caribbean Journey until demand outgrew the islands, and in 2011 it took its present name. Along the way she sold the business to a magazine publisher in 2004 and later bought it back, which tells you something about how hard it is to let a good journey go.

The mark earned this study by being so quietly confident. A small raised THE sits at the left, followed by a thin forward slash. JOURNEY GROUP then runs on in a single airy line of capitals, letterspacing doing all the work. A wordmark that spare either survives a press into leather or thins to nothing, and we wanted to know which.

The mark, as found

Pressed lengthwise

Blueberry answers the near-black navy panels the site sets behind its white wordmark, and gray-sand responds to the warm stone neutrals of the editorial pages. Black carries the gold. That thin slash held its edge in every one, which settled our question.

Every journey becomes a story

Their story archive opens under the heading “EVERY JOURNEY BECOMES A STORY,” and we took it at its word. We drew an open book whose dotted flight route lifts off the page and settles into lines of text, the way a trip turns into the telling of it. Beneath the book, their own words, pressed lengthwise.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
